  • Genetic factors reducing chalky kernels in rice

    The global warming trends dedcline rice quality in most of the rice-production-area in Japan. High temperature in the grain filling period induces chalky kernels, the result of poor starch deposition in the endosperm. We are trying to elucidate the genetic factors reducing chalky kernels under high temperature for the development of high-temperature-tolerant rice variety.

  • Development of cultivation technique reducing chalky kernel

    Chalky kernels are induced not only by high temperature but by nutritional factors, such as nitrogen. The application of nitrogen at the later growth stage reduces chalky kernels but deteriorates eating quality through increasing grain protein content. Therefore, precision nitrogen-application is required in terms of application rate and timing. For this purpose, we develop a model estimating the occurrence of chalky kernels based on climate condition and plant nutrition.

  • Improvifg rice grain filling

    For the high yielding of rice, large sink size and ample source ability for the sink is necessary. Recently developed high-yielding-varieties have enormous sink size but tend to show poor grain filling. Grain filling requires sufficient source supply and grain sink strength. We have found varietal differences in the grain sink strength. Using these varieties, we are trying to elucidate the genetic and physiological factors associating grain sink strength.

Teaching goals Basic English for Bioproduction Science
In this course, students are given training for reading comprehension and expression with emphasis on the terms and phrases specific for scientific English in the field of bioproduction and related area.

Food crop science
In this course, major field crops, i.e. cereal, legume and tuber crops, are introduced, covering their production, history and plant characteristics improving productivity, stress tolerance and quality. Also highlighted are examples of and challenges for advances in the crop production through cultivating techniques and breeding.
