Our aim is to produce valuable compounds (chemicals, fuels) from brown macroalgae using microbes such as yeast. We are now manipulating the oleaginous yeast (Yarrowia lipolytica) using genome-editing technology to confer the ability to utilize alginate, a major component of brown macroalgae, on the yeast. To get insight as to how brown macroalgae are utilized, we also focus on the intestine of Platorchestia joi which vigorously eats brown macroalgae using e.g. metagenomics.
